List Joe

As the program name might imply, List Joe is a free web based list building resource that claims to build your mailing list nine times faster than any other program:

It does this by having eight other list building programs that you sign up for from the members’ area, that are all accessed through the one List Joe URL.

The idea is that you then use this one URL in all of your promotions and whenever someone joins List Joe from your link, they are also encouraged to join the other eight programs as well, but they do so from your link. They are therefore in your downline, and you can send an e-mail to that person once a week for free.

A program like List Joe is a development of the ‘safelist’ idea, which was (and still is) essentially a discussion group where everybody in the group had permission to mail their promotional message to all the other members.

This sounds like it should be a fantastic resource, and in theory it is. The problem is that, because everyone has the right to send mail to every other member, you can send hundreds of mails every day, but you will also receive hundreds. It did not therefore take very long before people worked out how to block the majority or perhaps all of the incoming mails, while still retaining the right to send their own mails out.

Soon, everyone started doing the same, thus nullifying the effectiveness of the system.

List Joe is a hybrid of a safelist and a network marketing matrix. You have the ability to mail everyone in your downline and every one in their downlines too. If, for example, you recruit twenty new members and they each do the same, then you can mail your original 20 sign-ups plus all of theirs as well, totaling 420 outgoing mails.

If the next ‘layer’ of members underneath you also start to recruit people, you can mail them as well, so it is feasible that, if used properly, you can very quickly build a downline mailing list of thousands of people.

However, the only people that will mail you are your upline, and the program operates on the basis that you will receive no more than 15 mails per day, all of which you need to open in order to earn advertising credits. This is clearly far better than the hundreds that you might receive as a traditional safelist member.

The first thing that you need to do when you join List Joe is to sign up for all the other list builder programs that are included on the site. That way, whenever anyone signs up underneath you, they can also sign up for all the other list building programs underneath you as well (otherwise, they ‘belong’ to someone in your upline):

Incidentally, some of the other list builder programs mentioned in this book (e.g. ViralURL, List Bandit etc) are included in the List Joe program, as can be seen above.

Each of the mails that you receive will contain a random advert from someone in the network who has upgraded their membership, which is shown at the very top of the mail:

At the bottom of the mail is a clickable link that will take you to the web page of the upline member who is sending you the mail:

Broadly, the majority of these adverts will be for network marketing and MLM projects - so in terms of promoting internet marketing opportunities, there is actually not a great deal of competition.

At the free level of the program (as a ‘Little Joe’) you are entitled to send out one mail a week to other members in your downline, up to the maximum number of credits that you have accrued. The program actually gifts you the first 100 credits as well, so you can get started right away.

List Joe also offers several levels of upgrade, and as you would expect, the more you are willing to pay for the upgrade, the better the benefits that you will enjoy:

Note that the top option, the $197 for one year’s Gold membership is a one-time only offer that is available only at the point where you join List Joe.

Otherwise you will be paying the same sum for six months membership if you do not take advantage of the one-time only offer. (There is nothing to stop you joining List Joe again from a different e-mail address if you do not take advantage of the offer the first time around….)

Another thing to note is that, should someone who has joined the program in your downline decide to upgrade, then you will earn money, even if you are still a free member yourself (although you will earn more if you have also upgraded).

The ideal way to use List Joe is to build your downline through your own promotional efforts, while earning credits by reading other people’s e-mails. Once you have done enough promotion, at least in theory, some of your referrals will decide to upgrade and you will therefore start to earn some money.

At that point, you should take some of that money, and, rather than spending it or viewing it as income, you should re-invest it back into paid advertising which should then be much more effective than anything that you can do for free.

From that point on there should be a snowball effect, with more free members joining beneath you, leading to more upgrades which will then generate more cash coming in, which is more that can be invested in paid advertising, and so on.

That is the way that it should work in theory. Unfortunately, the reality is not always so clear or so encouraging, as we will discuss in a little more detail later.
